Psychology Counselling for Obesity and Weight Management

Rather than focusing on assessing Psychological (un)suitability for Bariatric surgery an evidenced based approach is used to improve readiness for surgery and post operative interventions to address recurring or emerging difficulties which may impact outcomes, Regardless of pre-operative mental health vulnerabilities, bariatric surgery requires major changes to eating behaviour and development of new skills which may be difficult to maintain.

Binge Eating Disorder, loss of control of eating and Emotional Eating are the most common eating related issues to re-emerge after bariatric surgery and is predictive of poorer weight loss.

Dr Mary Hynes, Senior Clinical Psychologist and Bariatric Psychologist provides pre and post-bariatric psychological support. In addition she offers weight management psychological interventions.

Cognitive-behavioural therapy (CBT) is a form of psychological treatment that has been demonstrated to be effective for a range of problems including depression, anxiety disorders, marital problems, eating disorders, and mental health issues. Numerous research studies suggest that CBT leads to significant improvement in functioning and quality of life. .

CBT is based on several core principles, including:

1. Psychological problems are based, in part, on faulty or unhelpful ways of thinking.

2. Psychological problems are based, in part, on learned patterns of unhelpful behaviour.

3. People suffering from psychological problems can learn better ways of coping with them, thereby relieving their symptoms and becoming more effective in their lives. CBT treatment usually involves efforts to change thinking

Cognitive Behavioural Therapy

Mindfulness-based cognitive therapy (MBCT) was developed as a psychological approach for people at risk for depressive relapse who wish to learn how to stay well in the long-term. MBCT is based on Jon Kabat-Zinn’s Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction program at the University of Massachusetts Medical Centre. It includes meditation techniques to help people become more aware of their experience in the present moment, by tuning into moment-to-moment changes in the mind and the body. Through the mindfulness practices people learn to see more clearly the patterns of the mind, and to recognise when mood is beginning to dip without adding to the problem by attempting to avoid or suppress painful thoughts and feelings, or by falling into analysis and rumination.

Mindfulness Intervention

Compassion focused therapy (CFT) is a system of psychotherapy developed by Prof. Paul Gilbert, Clinical Psychologist, that integrates techniques from cognitive behavioural therapy with concepts from evolutionary psychology, social psychology, developmental psychology, Buddhist psychology, and neuroscience. Compassion-Focused Therapy (CFT) helps those who struggle with the shame and self-criticism that can result from early experiences of abuse or neglect. CFT teaches clients to cultivate skills in compassion and self-compassion, which can help regulate mood and lead to feelings of safety, self-acceptance, and comfort. CFT has been shown to effectively treat long-term emotional problems including anxiety disorders, mood disorders, personality disorders, eating disorders, hoarding disorder, and psychosis by addressing patterns of shame and self-criticism, which can significantly contribute to mental health issues
